Identifying Family Patterns for Future Outcomes

When I started studying legacy, I didn't consider myself to be a part of one. There was no family business or intergenerational careers. I didn't follow in the career footsteps of my banker mother, school superintendent father, police officer grandfather nor the career in retail like my grandmother.
What I did notice as I began to research the career theories, interview members of family businesses, and assess my own work experiences, was that there were patterns. Patterns not just in career selections but in behaviors, aspirations, skills, and experiences. Though I can't name multiple family members who have had the same career, I can tell you about the similarities in their behaviors and reputations, inside and outside of the workplace.
I never wanted to be in banking but somehow I picked up the work trait of being reliable from my mom. I never wanted to be a teacher but somehow I worked for a couple of universities and found myself occasionally teaching classes there and in the community. Law enforcement was the farthest from my mind but on jobs I find myself enforcing policies and coming to the aid of those in need. When I was in between jobs, I worked in retail and built a reputation of being very customer service friendly. I never had an interest in any of the jobs or careers of my parents and grandparents but somehow they laid the patterns that shaped who I am as a professional.
That is legacy. It may not be the traditional form of what is packaged and marketed as legacy; however, it is a healthy example. Identifying familial patterns is one of the ways to discover your legacy and through this blog, we'll be on this journey together. Consider me your guide....welcome to Dr. PJ's Blog.
